We are truly delighted to have with us at the Selvedge Run, STUDIO D’ARTISAN, one of the original Osaka 5. The Japanese denim revival didn’t start in Tokyo, it traces its roots to Osaka, a region known for its textile manufacture. Like many Western countries, Japan saw a great deal of its textile industry move off shore. The factories with the old school shuttle looms lay dormant for a time. Then an interest in denim blossomed. The machines which once wove traditional fabrics for the likes of kimono’s were now repurposed to weave denim. Starting in 1979, STUDIO D’ARTISAN was potentially the first brand to use natural indigo dyed selvedge denim combined with old school, traditional manufacturing techniques. They were true forerunners in this field; the idea of raw selvedge denim with nods to traditional features such as the cinch back went against the grain given the fashion for heavy stone washing prevalent in the 80s. They found an audience and rode the wave of the vintage jeans boom in Japan. They are rightly known for their quality and craft as well as their understanding of tradition, not to mention the fantastic denim. Without STUDIO D’ARTISAN, the denim scene would be lacking a true pioneer and informer.
